How to find influencers for your brand: a practical field guide
The hard part of influencer marketing isn't finding influencers — it's finding the right ones. There are millions of creators; a handful will genuinely move your brand. Here's the filtering process we see work again and again.
Start from the audience, not the creator
Before opening any search tool, write down who should see the content: their age, geography, interests and the problem your product solves. A creator is only 'right' if their audience matches that description — everything else is noise.
This flips the search from 'big creators in my niche' to 'creators whose followers look like my customers'. It's a smaller list, and a much better one.
Use filters to cut millions down to hundreds
In a proper discovery tool, combine: platform, niche keywords in bio or content, follower range (10k–100k is the sweet spot for most brands), country and language, and engagement rate floor. That takes you from tens of millions to a few hundred candidates.
Natural-language search helps here too — 'vegan meal prep creators in Germany' beats guessing which filter combination captures that idea.
Then vet the top 20 by hand
Automation narrows; humans choose. For each candidate, check: Do they post regularly? Is engagement real (comments that say something, not emoji walls)? Have they posted about your category organically? Do previous brand deals look authentic or forced?
Run a fake-follower check on your final shortlist — a free tool does this in seconds and can save an entire gifting budget.
Keep the list alive
A shortlist isn't a one-off artifact. Save it, note who you contacted and how it went, and let it grow — the brands that treat creator discovery as an always-on pipeline end up with a roster competitors can't copy.
